St. Ambrose Choir: Fostering the Joy of Singing
First Choir Practice

The US Conference of Catholic Bishops has indicated that "Catholic schools are called to foster the joy of singing and making music, to cultivate the repertoire of sacred music inherited from the past ... and to celebrate the Sacred Liturgy worthily." Answering this call, St. Ambrose Academy has formed a student choir to meet weekly in the summer months. Nearly a dozen current and incoming students met in the St. Thomas Aquinas social hall the evening of July 7, 2009, for the inaugural rehearsal of the St. Ambrose Choir. St. Ambrose Academy President David Stiennon welcomed the students, and opened with a prayer invoking the intercession of school patron St. Ambrose, himself a composer of many sacred hymns, that those gathered "to study and practice the music of the Church’s sacred treasury, may grow in skill and devotion and thereby come to know our Lord Jesus Christ more perfectly in Beauty and Truth."

Notre Dame graduate Miss Katie Kleczek (pronounced Clay-Check) introduced the students to chant notation, and began (appropriately enough, considering the location) with a hymn composed by St. Thomas Aquinas. The students then practiced various Latin chants used regularly at Mass.

Future rehearsals will continue to study the Church’s treasury of chant, including the hymns of St. Ambrose, and will expand to include polyphonic works. Students interested in participating should contact the school secretary.
